The Department for Education is launching the new L3, T Level (Technical Level) qualification in September 2020, equivalent to 3 A Levels. Designed in collaboration with employers and businesses, it will prepare students for a successful career in their chosen sector/industry by providing the necessary technical knowledge and skills they will need for a range of occupations related to that sector. In addition to classroom/workshop learning, the T Level includes a 45 day industrial placement and depending on achievement, students can progress directly into employment, a Higher/Degree Apprenticeships or University.
Where an Apprenticeship provides the knowledge and skills needed for a specific job role e.g. Light Vehicle Technician in the Motor Industry, the T Level has a broader focus. The content is designed around the common needs of the Sector/Industry rather than a specific job role. In this way, Year 11 students who know the Sector they want to work in but not the job role, are encouraged to review the T Level as a possible pathway.
From Sept 2020 T Levels will be available in the following subject areas:
- Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction
- Digital Construction, Design and Development
- Education and Childcare
T Levels in other subjects are planned for launch in Autumn 2021. There are currently 4 approved providers in London and for a full list of all providers visit: List of providers
