There's an old song which starts -'Accentuate the Positive Eliminate the Negative.........................'-
Great lyrics and there's a lesson for us all in them, but sometimes it's difficult for us to disregard the aspects of our personalities/abilities that may be preventing us from reaching our potential. That's why, recognising our unique strengths and building on them is so important, and when we do, we can harness our strengths to compensate for the things we're not so good at. One of my key objectives as a careers adviser is to help students build confidence, and helping them identify what they're good at is a key part of that.
Too often I work with young people whose self-esteem is low because they're unaware of their strengths and unique qualities. Let's support them to find their strengths and ACCENTUATE them. As the song goes 'accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, latch on to the affirmative, don't mess with Mr in between.........'
